Mountainside Community Church--From the Crowd to the Disciple

The crowds of families on Halloween on the three blocks of King Street shut down for a two hour candy-rush!  Sometimes the frisbees wouldn't fit in a little candy-bucket, but everyone who wanted a free frisbee found a way to haul it with their candy stash!

The crowds of families on Halloween on the three blocks of King Street shut down for a two hour candy-rush!  Sometimes the frisbees wouldn't fit in a little candy-bucket, but everyone who wanted a free frisbee found a way to haul it with their candy stash!

This is a really familiar scene around here.  A red wagon or newspaper sachets loaded to the brim with Frisbee’s.  We have been somewhere every week gifting people with a little bit of fun, and within minutes you can spot white Frisbee’s thrown through the sky.  Sometimes people want to talk too, and we are glad to answer questions if they have them- but honestly, most people just say, “Thank you!”

We are reaching and reaching and reaching and reaching- extending our hand of fellowship in every way and in every direction.  Why?  Because we have tasted the goodness of God, the close companionship of Jesus, and the best fellowship of the dearest friends in the context of Church- we long for everyone to get to taste that too.  We are a very small Community, but even in our smallness we are reaching to build a Community of Christ Followers to join God’s good work here in Boone.

I'm particularly reminded of the phrasing of the words in Mark's (writing for Peter) gospel account, "Then calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, 'If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me'." (Mark 8:34).  Then calling the crowds to join his disciples . . . is exactly what we are doing.  From the crowds, Shannon has started meeting with two men who are ready to train to be "disciples-who-make-disciples".  From the crowd to just a few.  From the crowds there are four couples and a young single man who've joined our core team to help build this fresh Community of Christ Followers.

Why?  Because when we walk these beautiful mountain pathways there is a strong sense of God’s longing to satisfy the thirsty.  To remind these people and this town that God longs for them.  He is close.  He is pursuing them.  They are not forgotten.

Yes, there are a lot of Churches in Boone, like many cities across America, but there are thousands of folks who are are not attending any of them. May God enable us to love well in His great Name.

Please keep our team of four families in your prayers!  Pray for our health, our children, our employment, our vehicles, and every resource to be held by Jesus as we continue to reach to this city.  Pray for us to be wise and discerning of His Voice, and to be brave in our love.  Please pray with us that God will add to our number daily!

There are so many disenfranchised  people here, so many questions, the harvest is truly ripe!  Pray for the Lord of the Harvest to send His people to aid the work of Mountainside Community Church in Boone!
